Blog 5: Wonderful Experience in Bunkyo Festival

Last weekend, we took part in the Bunkyo Festival which is an annual school festival for students to show their achievement of clubs and sell some foods to get some extra money. Actually, this kind of festival is very common in most of the Japanese high schools and colleges. In Japanese, it was called 学園祭 which means school’s Matsuri, so this kind of festival in Japan still have connection with Shinto.

We are the international exchange students from many countries, so we belonged to International Communication Club. Due to this event was opened to publics and many children would come to here, so we need to design some interesting games for kids. We cooperated toghther to make props for the games. Everyone tried their best to finish their own works.

Many Japanese people came to B’s Cafe to play games, everyone was very exciting to communicate with us when they knew we are the international students. Some parents asked their children to speak English to us. I was surprised that Japanese children started to learn English in a very young age. However, communication was a big problems for us. Our Japanese were bad, so explaing the rule of games was really a big trouble for us. Many times, I used some easy English words to combine with some easy Japanese words to talk with Japanese people. Most of them could understand what I said.

I experienced many interesting things through this event, especially talking to local people instead of BGU students. it really helped me to know more about this community that we lived.
